About the work
From inside it looks fine. Then you walk out and feel the deck give a little right where it meets the stairs. Could be a footing that never went deep enough. Could be a ledger that's been wicking water behind the siding. Could be a porch somebody slapped together years back that nobody's checked since.
Nashville summers run long, hot, and humid, and that humidity is what quietly wears wood down — rot, soft spots, fasteners giving out before the boards do. Winters stay mild most years, but enough freeze-thaw rolls through to move whatever wasn't set deep and set right.

Pressure-treated pine, cedar, and the trade-offs with each. Looks like wood because it is, runs cheaper than most composite, and holds up for years when it's built right and you stay ahead of the humidity.

How we build decks
Footings have to be set right, below the frost line, on ground that doesn't always cooperate. Posts set and supported. Beams sized to carry the load. Joists spaced correctly. Hangers, fasteners, blocking, flashing, ledger attachment — all of it has to make sense together and pass inspection. And in a historic overlay like East Nashville or Edgefield, the design has to clear Metro review before the first board goes down, which we plan around from the start.
This is where the bad work hides. A deck can wear a beautiful top board and still be wrong underneath where nobody's looking.
